Music Magazine Example

Music Magazine Example
This is an example of a music magazine, from hard rock music channel kerrang. The example is a perfect example of a music magazine. Kerrang is a magazine aimed at an audience of rock and metal fans. Due to this genre of music the audience is a niche audience. The magazine is released once a week, meaning it must sell well every week.

The features that make this music magazine effective, and attractive are......
  1. Main image, is large and is the thing that grabs your eye the most, the person is also very recognisable to the audience that the magazine is aimed at. The man is Gerrard Way who is the front man of the punk outfit My Chemical Romance.
  2. The colour scheme is very attractive to the audience, due to the use of complementeray colours that also match the main image and mast head. Red, black white and yellow.
  3. The Masthead is easy to read and stands out to the reader as the biggest text size of all text on the page.
  4. Simple coverlines, not to many not to few, easy to understand what the magazine contains.

Student Magazine Proposal

This is the proposal for my student magazine. In this proposal I will note all the things I would like to include in my student magazine. From title to main article everything in this is my first main ideas, which will all be crucial to the final product.

·       The title I have decided on is Student Life. I have chose this title for the simple reason that’s what the magazine is about. What could be more appropriate than to call the magazine Student Life. My initial idea was “ U student” But decided against it because it looked childish.

·      My chosen audience Is people who go to college ranging from the ages of 16-20. I have chosen this age group because the majority of people in college are this age.

·      The magazine will be all about general college life, looking at specific lessons each week. The magazine will have sections dedicated to student life problems eg drugs, relationships or bullying.

·      I plan to have five cover lines on the left third. The ideas of cover lines are.
1.   Top 25 revison tips.
2.   Down to earth with physics
3.   A teachers guide to the perfect pencil case.
4.   The pupils top 5 college meals.
5.   The southdowns Low Down.

·      I want to use an informal font in which the colour matches what my main image colours are.

·      I have decided on a tag line saying just after the title. “It’s a Hard Life….”
·      The magazine will be released every week due to the constant change around college.

·      The main image will be a close up on one of my mates, showing his shoulders and up.

Task 3 part 2 - To what extent should magazines be held responsible for the social ramifications of the representations they offer?

Magazines are always aimed at a certain audience, these audiences can range from Toddlers to die hard metal heads. But one thing all magazines have in common is that their loyal fans will believe anything that’s written inside them.
I have been asked to explain the social ramifications that are printed in teenage magazines, and for someone my age this is quite a hard thing to establish but when looked into deeply it has become obvious that something is not completely right. To start my essay I looked in to what the phrase “social ramifications” actually means and came to the final conclusion that it’s a negative effect on the reader that makes the audience seem like what they are printing is what one has to be, possibly leading to no singularity among social groups. For example if a magazine aimed at teenage girls says “How to dress like a model” this will have an affect on all teenage girls who read the article. Many will become overwhelmed with the idea of looking like a model they will actually forget who they truly are.

Task 3 - 5 examples of magazines aimed at teenage girls.

The following 5 magazines are all example of Teenage girl magazines front covers. I've had to study them closely and identify what all girl magazines have in common.

Total Girl.
The first magazine I have chosen is Total Girl and instantly you can tell this magazine is aimed at teen girls, mainly due to the color
scheme and the title. The colors are all pinkish or "girly" and this would usually relate to a girl. I think girls would buy this magazine cause the name Total Girl, suggests that its that its totally girly and will cover all things girls are interested in. The featured articles are all girly eg. Miley Cyrus, fashion bargains.

Muslim Girl.
Another magazine aimed at teenage girls but this time a whole different religion. The color scheme is pretty much the same as total girls, and all the featured articles relate to Total girls eg. the Fashion segments.

Girl Friend.
This magazine is titled Girlfriend and you can instantly establish that its for girls. This is yet another example of how the use of pink in girl magazines is popular, as well as the use of other colors like pink and green. This one also has a fashion segment. Another key selling point on this magazine is the magazines slogan. "What all the cool girls have in common" making this be something a girl will want to buy cause she essentially is about to buy the secret to being a "cool" girl.

Bliss.
Bliss is another girl magazine but is one of the better selling magazines. This one has a lot in common with all of the rest, another fashion section but this time showing some of this fashion. Colors used are pink again and this one also covers a musical story of Selena Gomes who is a very famous pop singer and Disney actress.

American Girl.
Here is another example of a teenage girl magazine but this time they have gone with a different color scheme, this time it is mainly green. I believe the reason they have chosen the color green is to bring more attention to the girl in the main image. This time there is no main article relating to the main image only a few cover lines relating to fashion, school etc.

Task 2 : Magazines & Audiences

Kerrang magazine has been around for years now and now has a very distinguished community of fans. The magazine started in 1981 initially meant to be a one time supplement focusing on the rise of hard rock acts such as AC/DC, however it done so well they decided to release more issues at later dates and is still running to this day.

Kerrang is aimed at a very niche audience of hardcore rock and rollers and punk phanatics, so doesn't appeal to the majority of the public, however Kerrang also have a Music Channel for sky viewers which runs nearly 24/7 blasting peoples ears full of riffs and solos, what more would you want?

The designer of this issue above has made this issue appeal to the audience by doing many smart things. The first being simple, its common logic that if you put one of the best rock bands of all time as the main image on your magazine people are obviously going to get interested. In this case he has placed a large picture of Axl Rose singing. To the majority of the public this wont appeal but when it comes to rock and roll this mans band "Guns N' Roses" people who like rock will love this issue.

As well as the main image, the designer has put right at the top "Free Inside", this automatically sells the magazine as everyone loves free stuff, and to a collector something free with the magazine is like an extra piece to his collection.
